Day 2

This morning we embark on a food lover’s odyssey!  We will take an unusual walking tour this morning to explore some of Rome’s most interesting and delicious food shops, in some of Rome’s most picturesque neighborhoods.  And of course, we will taste everything as we go along.  Afterwards, you will have time on your own to explore the area, eat more (if you can!) and later we will meet up for a tour of the ancient heart of Rome.  We will visit the Coliseum and Forum with a certified local Roman guide for an inside look at one of the wonders of the world.  Tonight you have time to see magical Rome by night and dinner on your own.

Day 4

This morning, we check out of our hotel and say Arrivederci Roma en route to our new home in Umbria.  Umbria is known as the green heart of Italy.  Our hotel is located just outside the ancient walls of the medieval village of Montefalco.  Once we arrive in town, we will have a quick orientation tour and lunch on your own.  Afterwards, we will visit a local olive oil producer to understand how olive oil is  made and a tasting of the oil produced on this estate.  Then we move on to visit a winery showcasing some of the finest wines of this region.  We go back to our hotel for a hearty meal of classic Umbrian dishes, paired with just the right wines.  Our first night in this villa is sure to be a relaxing one after all the fun hustle and bustle of Rome.

Day 5

Fall is a very important season for Umbria, from the wine harvest to the olive harvest to one of the region’s most famous products:  truffles!  This morning, we learn how to hunt for truffles as we participate in a hunt with a true truffle hunter and his dog near the village of Norcia.  Afterward, we visit a nearby agriturismo that specializes in the cheeses of Umbria.  We learn how their cheese is made and enjoy a light lunch of those cheeses and local salami.  We then head into the village for a guided tour and then to a very special spot for a cooking class and dinner in Norcia.  We will make our dinner tonight and finish the evening enjoying the fruits of our labor, along with a glass of wine or two.  We head back to our hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Day 6

Today is dedicated to both St. Francis and chocolate.  We will start our morning off with a visit to Assisi to learn more about t
his saint and his inspirational life.  Afterwards, we head to the region’s capitol Perugia to meander through the streets during a very important festival in Umbria:  Eurochocolate Festival.  This is the most important chocolate festival in Europe, and takes place in the picturesque historical center of Perugia.  Hundreds of stalls sell Europe’s finest chocolate products, while street performers and musicians make the atmosphere feel like one giant party.  This is a great time to pick up last minute gifts to take home.  If we are lucky, we might even take a class to learn how chocolate is made or how to pair wine and chocolate together.  This evening, we will have dinner in a traditional trattoria together in Montefalco and toast to another day in foodie heaven!

Day 7

This morning we will say goodbye to beautiful Umbria and our hotel as we head back to Rome.  En route we will make a stop in the medieval village of Orvieto.  Orvieto is designated as a CittaSlow city by the organization Slow Food for its dedication to preserving the traditional food ways of the region.  Orvieto also is home to a gorgeous Duomo whose facade glitters like gold in the sunshine.  We will visit a famous salumeria and try a variety of local meats and cheeses, as well as the famous roasted pork of the area called porchetta.  You will also have time to explore this charming city on your own for a while and do some shopping.  Orvieto is also famous for hand-painted ceramics.  Then we head on to Rome for our final evening together.  We will check back into our hotel and enjoy our final dinner together at one of EAT’s favorite local family-owned restaurants.

Day 8

This morning we say arrivederci to one another as you make your own way to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, the train station, or wherever else your travels may take you.  We hope you had a wonderful time and look forward to seeing you again on another edible adventure!
